Ask any Australian who has done it: the drive from Miami to Key West is the Great Ocean Road of the northern hemisphere. Around 160 miles of US-1, the Overseas Highway, hopping island to island across 42 bridges, including the famous Seven Mile Bridge at Marathon, with turquoise water on both sides most of the way. It deserves better than being white-knuckled in an unfamiliar hire car on the wrong side of the road.

With a chauffeur it becomes the day it should be. Leave Miami in the morning, stop at Islamorada for coffee or a look at the sandbar flats, stretch your legs at Marathon, and roll into Key West with three or four solid hours for Duval Street, the Hemingway Home and its six-toed cats, the Southernmost Point buoy, and key lime pie eaten properly, standing up, in the heat.

Timing tip from our drivers: if you can, hold out for sunset at Mallory Square before heading back. The nightly Sunset Celebration, all buskers and sailboats, is worth the later return, and you can doze the whole way home while your driver handles the dark stretch of highway.
